Mandatory winter equipment in mountain areas
From November 1, 2021, winter equipment will be mandatory in some mountain areas every year during the winter period.
New winter period: from November 1 to March 31 of each year.
Mountain areas concerned: Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Mountains, Pyrenees, Vosges.

Equipment: removable anti-slip devices (chains and wheel covers), or winter tires (3PMSF).
- Buses and coaches (M2, M3):
– The vehicle may be fitted with at least two chains (or other equivalent anti-slip devices) OR
– At least 4 winter tires mounted on at least two steered wheels and at least two driven wheels. If the vehicle has more than one steering axle, these are the main steering wheels. - Heavy trucks (N2, N3):
– The vehicle without a trailer or semi-trailer may have at least two chains (or equivalent removable anti-slip devices) OR
– Have at least 4 winter tires mounted on at least two steered wheels and at least two drive wheels.
If the vehicle has more than one steering axle, these are the main steering wheels.
– Trucks driving with a trailer or semi-trailer must in all cases be equipped with removable anti-slip devices.
